Although it’s packed with a ton of value, SEMrush pricing is pretty expensive. But is the cost of SEMrush worth it? Here are my unbiased thoughts on SEMrush pricing and value after using it for keyword research.
SEMrush offers three monthly subscription plans—Pro, Guru, and Business. All three SEMrush subscriptions are recurring and renew every month.
- Pro – $99.95
- Guru – $199.95
- Business – $399.95
While the Guru and Business plans offer a ton of value for larger businesses, I recommend you start with the cheaper Pro plan.
If you’re hooked after a 7 day SEMrush free trial, I recommend you continue for another month with the plan. I personally don’t think an SEMrush trial of one week is long enough, but since you aren’t locked in with the monthly plan, you can easily cancel it whenever.
Over the course of one year, you will spend $1,199.40 on the SEMrush Pro plan. That’s a lot of money, especially for an entrepreneur who’s just starting out.
Rather than paying full price for the monthly plan, SEMrush offers a discounted annual plan. The SEMrush discount is 15% for the annual plan. So instead of paying $99.95 per month, the monthly rate for the Pro plan when paid annually becomes $84.95. Over the course of one year, that’s almost two free months of SEMrush.
How I Use SEMrush
I primarily use SEMrush’s Keyword Magic Tool to conduct keyword research for this blog. SEMrush has dozens of other tools, but at this point, I only use the Keyword Magic Tool.
At a basic level, each blog post that I write targets a specific keyword or keyword phrase. Before even writing the first word of my blog post, I do a bit of keyword research.
What I essentially do is type in a keyword or phrase into SEMrush to see the monthly search volume and number of search results for phases containing my keyword. Go ahead and give it a try. In my example below, I am searching for the word “laptop”.
I apply a filter to only show keywords with less than 500,000 search results and more than 50 monthly search volume. In addition, I filter out keywords with less than 1,000 results in SERP to remove any anomalies.
The reason we do this is to filter out overly saturated keywords with too many Google search results. It would be nearly impossible to rank on Google for a keyword with millions of search results. Additionally, we also want to target keywords with enough monthly search volume to be worthwhile.
As a result, if you target keywords with a low Results to Search Volume ratio, you have a much greater chance of ranking better in Google search results.
Is SEMrush Worth It?
While SEMrush has a bunch of other features in addition to the Keyword Magic Tool, I am only using this single feature at this time. Consequently, the Keyword Magic Tools gives me enough value to justify the expensive SEMrush price of nearly $100/month.
As someone who doesn’t have an income at this time, spending $100 per month on a marketing analytics software subscription wasn’t an easy decision. But after understanding the importance of keyword research and realizing how it can catapult my blog posts to the top of search results, I concluded that this tool was not only helpful, but critical to my blog’s success.
In other words, I have to spend money to make money.
That’s why if you are in a similar situation as me, I recommend you start with a 7 day SEMrush free trial like I did. Even though SEMrush pricing is expensive, you’ll quickly realize the price is worth it. If not, then no harm done.
